Why Cheap Leads Don’t Always Become Customers
Low cost per lead does not always mean better business. Learn how to check lead quality, ask the right questions and focus on enquiries that can become customers.
1. Start with what a qualified lead means
A cheap enquiry is useful only if the person could realistically buy from you. Before launching ads, agree on the service area, requirement, budget range and buying timeline. For a local showroom, a nearby customer asking about a relevant collection may be a useful lead. For a B2B supplier, location alone is not enough: the buyer’s role and expected requirement matter too.
2. Make the ad filter as well as attract
Describe your actual product, location and offer clearly. Include a starting price or investment range where it helps the buyer decide. An ad that says everything is for everyone can create plenty of curiosity clicks. A specific ad may bring fewer enquiries but give the sales team more relevant conversations.
3. Ask only the questions you will use
Collect a small amount of information that changes your next step: city, requirement and preferred callback time are often a useful start. Ask budget or purchase timeline when appropriate. Avoid a long form full of questions that nobody reviews. Every extra question adds friction, so choose it for a reason.
4. Check whether the follow-up is the problem
Separate invalid details, unreachable contacts, genuine enquiries and qualified prospects. A person who missed one call is not automatically a fake lead. Try a short message and a reasonable callback before closing the enquiry. Record why each lead was lost so campaign changes are based on evidence.
5. Compare cost and quality together
Cost per qualified lead equals ad spend divided by qualified leads. For example, a hypothetical ₹5,000 campaign with 100 enquiries and 10 qualified leads has a ₹50 cost per enquiry and a ₹500 cost per qualified lead. A second campaign with 50 enquiries and 20 qualified leads costs ₹100 per enquiry but ₹250 per qualified lead. The cheaper enquiry does not always produce the better prospect.
Your practical action checklist
- Define qualified leads with your sales team.
- Add clear location and offer details to your ads.
- Ask two or three useful qualification questions.
- Record contact attempts and loss reasons.
- Review cost per qualified lead and actual sales together.
Check lead quality before increasing your budget. A useful campaign brings prospects your team can serve, and a useful sales process gives those prospects a clear next step.
