What to Track in Your Ads Beyond Clicks and Likes

Clicks and likes show only part of the picture. Track qualified enquiries, cost per lead and sales feedback to understand what your campaigns are contributing.

1. Separate attention from customer actions

Reach, impressions, clicks and likes help explain whether people notice and respond to an ad. They do not prove that the campaign created customers. Define the action that matters for this campaign: a submitted enquiry, a phone conversation, an appointment or a purchase.

2. Track successful enquiries accurately

A contact button click and a completed form submission are different events. Name and measure them separately. Test whether submissions are recorded once, and check tracking after website changes. If you track WhatsApp clicks, remember that a click does not confirm a message was sent or a conversation took place.

3. Add lead quality to the report

Agree on what counts as a qualified enquiry and ask the sales team to record the outcome. Review location, requirement and buying readiness where relevant. Calculate cost per qualified lead as ad spend divided by qualified enquiries. Keep the definition consistent so changes in the report reflect real differences.

4. Follow the lead through the sales process

Record how many qualified leads become appointments, how many attend and how many purchase. Lead-to-sale rate is sales divided by the relevant lead group, multiplied by 100. State which lead group and time period you use. Some purchases happen later, so compare cohorts carefully rather than assuming this week’s spend produced this week’s sales.

5. Interpret revenue metrics with their limits

Where attributable revenue is available, ROAS is attributed revenue divided by ad spend. It is not profit and does not include every business cost. Avoid adding platform-reported revenue together when the same purchase may be claimed by multiple channels. Combine ad reports, CRM outcomes and sales records to get a more useful picture.

Your practical action checklist

  • Define the main business action before launch.
  • Separate clicks from completed enquiries.
  • Test conversion tracking and duplicate events.
  • Collect lead quality and sales outcomes.
  • Review cost, conversion rates and attributed revenue together.

A useful report shows what happened and what needs to change. Keep the measures understandable and connect them to decisions your team can act on.
